Open Access and Open Research Data Events

 

23–29 October: Open Access Week 2023 – “Community over Commercialisation”

In a joint effort, a number of Swiss universities and libraries organised a program for the 2023 international Open Access Week which this year has the guiding theme "Community over Commercialisation". There will be a mix of online, hybrid and local events offered in English, German or French.

Open Access Week 2023: event series organised by the libraries of HfH, PHZH, ZHAW and ZHdK

The Zurich Universities of Applied Sciences organise four online sessions: between 23–26 October from 4pm to 5pm daily, they provide insights into their experiences, successes and projects in Open Access publishing.

18 and 25 October: Open Access and the Revolution in Academic Publishing

During these workshops, we'll have insightful talks followed by panel discussions featuring publishers, editors, representatives from funding agencies, and PIs at various career levels. Our agenda includes discussions on the Paths to Open Access, Innovations in Scientific Publishing, and crucially, how we can shift away from relying on the Impact Factor to evaluate scientists—an important topic for the next generation of researchers.

24 October: Lecture by Matthias Egger on Open Access as part of «WSL Distinguished Lectures»

Lib4RI is exited to host Matthias Egger, President of the National Research Council of the SNSF, who will give a talk on “Open access: the good, the bad and the ugly?”. He will delve into the advantages and challenges of OA, addressing concerns like peer review quality and predatory practices, and will conclude with a look at best practices and alternative publishing methods.

15 November: “Linked Open Data in Dialogue” 

The swissuniversities funded project LOD4HSS co-organizes the Event “Linked Open Data in Dialogue” at University of Bern taking place on the 15th of November.

15 November: SWISS EOSC online coffee break

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to develop a ‘Web of FAIR Data and services’ for science in Europe upon which a wide range of value-added services can be built. Would you like to know how Switzerland is involved, and how it proposes to unlock the full potential of research data to accelerate discoveries and innovation? If so, please join the SWISS EOSC COFFEE on Wednesday, 15 November 2023 at noon. 

The Swiss EOSC expert group is delighted to welcome Karel Luyben, President of the European Open Science Cloud Association (EOSC-A) Bob Jones, deputy head of IT department at CERN & Member of the EOSC Board of Directors, for the November online coffee break. Karel will introduce the audience to EOSC before Bob will provide us with insights on what a node is and will offer future perspectives for EOSC and the European Countries, followed by Sebastian Sigloch, Head of Data & Insights and EOSC representative at Switch, who will offer the Swiss perspective and before the audience is invited to discuss the status quo.

The Swiss EOSC expert group is looking forward to welcoming you to this 60 minutes online event on Wednesday 15 November at noon (no inscription). Please note that the event will be held in English.

21 November: Open Research Data Workshop in St. Gallen

The PH St. Gallen and the PH Thurgau conduct a workshop on Open Research Data in collaboration with the University of Teacher Education in Special Needs, PH Schwyz and SFUVET. This is part of the PgB project ‘Data Stewardships at small and medium-sized universities of teacher education’ supported by swissuniversities. 

This workshop is open to all and will provide opportunities for exchange of practice and knowledge as well as for networking. Participants are invited and encouraged to bring in open questions from research projects and contribute their own examples from practice. 

Keynote speech (participation on site and online possible): Legal framework for ORD

Workshop topics: 1) Consent forms and legal foundations,  2) Guidelines and processes of ethics committees,  3) Open research data and data management plans

6 December: Award Ceremony – National ORD Prize 2023

The National ORD Prize honors innovative practices in the field of Open Research Data. The Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences are delighted to invite you to the first Award Ceremony for the National ORD Prize 2023.
