FROM THE OPEN SCIENCE PROGRAMME 

Reminder: submission deadline 22 Feb. 2024 for the call B3.2 – ORD funding for existing research infrastructures of strategic relevance

The aim of Measure B3 is to allocate cost-effective, long-term funding for ORD services and infrastructures of national significance. The call B3.2 welcomes project proposals that aim to promote ORD either by introducing a new ORD element or by further developing an ORD component in existing research infrastructures. If possible, and to avoid duplication, synergies with other existing infrastructures should be sought.

The call is open to existing infrastructures of all institutions eligible for funding that fulfill specific conditions (cf. Application Guidelines).

Looking back on the Open Science Event in Berne on 31 Jan 2024:

Over 100 participants joined the presentation of the Open Access Strategy Review organised by swissuniversities at the University of Berne. The revised draft of the National Open Access strategy was presented and discussed by Christian Schwarzenegger, (Vice-President Faculty Affairs and Scientific Information, University of Zurich); and Christine Pirinoli (Vice-Rector Research and Innovation, HES-SO), both members of the advisory committee to the strategy review process.

On the panel, the strategy was discussed and challenged from the perspectives of researchers, academic libraries and publishers in Switzerland. Many thanks to the panellists, Silke Bellanger (Head Digital Services Unibas), Thomas Henkel (Co-President AKOA) and Thomas Kramer (Publisher Park Books and Scheidegger & Spiess).

The event offered a platform for exchange of different perspectives on the broad field of OA in Switzerland and made the current discussion around the OA and the Swiss strategy visible.

Lunch & Learn Open Science Series at the University of Zurich – programme overview

The “Lunch & Learn Open Science” event series is going into to the next round. The monthly events are organized by the Open Science Services team of the UZH University Library and take place online over lunch on Zoom. Each event begins with a half-hour input talk at 12 pm and concludes after an open Q&A session at about 1 pm.

8th March: National Diamond Open Access Conference in Switzerland “Acting Together for Sustainable Scholar-Led Publishing”

On 8 March 2024, the Platinum Open Access Funding project will host the first national Diamond Open Access Conference in Switzerland “Acting Together for Sustainable Scholar-Led Publishing”. The one-day conference seeks to raise awareness for scholar-led and community-owned scholarly publishing and will bring together the Swiss Diamond Open Access community around issues of sustainability. The conference programme can be found here.

Friday, 8 March 8 2024, from 9.30am to 5.30 pm

PROGR, Waisenhausplatz 30, 3011 Bern. Conference language is English.

The conference is open for all, and attendance is free of charge. Please register by 1 March 2024. 


11-12 April: Swiss Conference on Data Science for the Sciences

Registration & Call for Posters open

The Data Science for the Sciences (DS4S) conference provides a forum where experts working on different facets of data science — from Statistical Data Science to Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence — can meet and exchange ideas. DS4S will feature presented contributions on topics encompassing AI for Medicine, Physics-Guided Machine Learning for Climate Modelling, AI & Robotics, Privacy safeguarding, Causality and Neuroscience. Open Research Data will also be put to the fore via a dedicated session.

10-11 June: SWISS REPRODUCIBILITY CONFERENCE 2024

Call for Contributed Talks and Posters

The Swiss National Science Foundation and the Swiss Reproducibility Network invite you to submit abstracts for the Swiss Reproducibility Conference, taking place June, 10 - 11, 2024 in Zürich.

The aim of the conference is to bring together world-leading experts in the field of reproducible research with researchers from all career levels, including early career researchers, and from all disciplines to engage with and learn from each other how to make research more rigorous, transparent and reproducible. The programme includes themed sessions on reproducibility and replication, transparency and open scholarship, and meta-research as well as assessment. Confirmed keynote speakers are:

  • Prof. Sarah de Rijcke, Leiden University

Call for Nominations for the Swiss Reproducibility Award 2024

The goal of the Swiss Reproducibility Award is to support and highlight research output of early career researchers as well as research teams who adhere to the highest standards of rigour, transparency and reproducibility. The SNSF and SwissRN invite nominations for different award categories.

CoARA Working Group on Reforming Academic Career Assessment: Survey

The CoARA Working Group on Reforming Academic Career Assessment aims to broaden the reflection on academic career assessment, taking into account the full range of work conducted by academics in research, teaching and learning, innovation, management/leadership and service to society. 

More knowledge on challenges, enablers and change processes can greatly help higher education institutions and research organisations across the globe as they navigate their own reform initiatives. Therefore, the Working Group is conducting a survey to map existing initiatives of academic career assessment at higher education institutions and research organisations. This may include initiatives which aim to broaden the criteria and methods for evaluating the outputs and impacts of academic activities for the purposes of recruitment, performance evaluation and career progression of academic staff. 

This survey is open to all higher education institutions and research organisations worldwide. Please feel free to disseminate this call within your extended network.

The survey is open until 22 March 2024.
