FROM THE OPEN SCIENCE PROGRAMME
Federal cost-cutting measures: Effects on the programme Open Science II
On 20 September 2024, the Federal Council announced which cost-cutting measures suggested in the report of the ‘Spending and Subsidy Review’ expert group are to be pursued further. These measures include the discontinuation of project-related contributions (PgB).
swissuniversities has been informed that for now, financial resources for the 2025–2028 programmes can only be committed and allocated for the year 2025.
Against this backdrop, the swissuniversities Board has recommended the implementation of all programmes planned for the 2025–2028 period. In 2025, they should be provided with an amount that corresponds to their share of the originally planned total volume for 2025–2028 (total for all programmes funded with project-related contributions). The Swiss Higher Education Council SHK approved this request on 8 November 2024. These decisions are still subject to the approval of the Federal Assembly, which will adopt the 2025 federal budget in the winter session from 2 to 20 December 2024. The responsible swissuniversities bodies will be regularly informed, and consolidated information will be published on this website.
Consequently, for the Programme Open Science II, the Delegation Open Science will decide in December which action lines will be implemented, in what form and time frame. We will inform you about the decisions as soon as possible.
Awarded ORD Mandates for Action Lines B5.1, B5.4, C2.3
Three new ORD mandates were awarded to the Swiss Research Data Support Network (SRDSN) and will be implemented from October 2024 to June 2025.
Action Line B5.1 of the Swiss National ORD Action Plan, "Establish and maintain/update Swiss-wide best practices of ORD expertise," aims to support the development of best practices in the field of data stewardship that could apply to all Swiss higher education and research institutions. The leading house for the mandate is UniBE with the partners PHTG, SUPSI, UZH, FORS, SIB, and UNIL.
Action Line B5.4 "Establish ORD expertise (e.g. data stewardship) as an independent career path at HEIs by 2028," has the objective to analyse the needs as well as current and possible future challenges for HEIs to establish an independent career path for ORD expertise. The leading house for the mandate is Universität Basel with the partners UNIL, SUPSI, SIB, FORS, and UNIGE.
Action Line C2.3 "Framework for systematic communication between trainers and data stewards to facilitate professionalisation and the exchange of experiences, best practices, needs, and to develop training modules," plans to conduct a gap analysis on the status quo of RDM training and communication between trainers in Switzerland. The leading house for the mandate is USI with the partners ZHAW, Universität Basel, UNIL, and FORS.

Awarded ORD Mandate for Action Line D2.5
Action line D2.5 of the Swiss National ORD Action Plan aims to develop guidelines for ORD in the case of collaborations with the private sector. The objective of the mandate is to analyse existing rules (legal framework) when sharing data coming from collaborations with the private sector and to document current practices in this context.
The leading house for the mandate is ETH Zürich. See details on the content of the mandate here.
Invitation: Event Programme Open Science on 22 January 2025, the Programme Open Science will host an event in Berne, marking the end of the 2021-2024 funding period. We will take stock, highlight the achievements and challenges and provide an outlook.

25-29 Nov. 2024: Research Data Management and Open Science in Social Sciences Workshops
The USI (Università della Svizzera italiana) invite you to register for, or promote to your doctoral and postdoctoral researcher the brand new Advanced Skills for Research Data Management and Open Science in Social Sciences course. 27 Nov 2024: Invitation: Award Ceremony National ORD Prize 2024
The Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences cordially invite you to participate in the Award Ceremony for the National ORD Prize 2024 which is part of the Swiss National Strategy for Open Research Data (ORD).
The event will take place on 27 November 2024 at the Eventfabrik Bern (Fabrikstrasse 12, 3012 Bern).
Starting at 5 p.m., you can look forward to a program including an insightful panel discussion with members of the ORD Strategy Council, a keynote speech by Associate Professor Anneke Zuiderwijk (Delft University), and the presentation of the prize winners, including lightning talks by the winning projects. The evening will be concluded with an Apéro Riche.

4 Dec 2024: Digital Editions in Dialogue
Digital editions are core research outputs and basic research in the humanities. The digital implementation of editions aims for completeness, in-depth indexing and sustainability. This means that editors are faced with a variety of challenges that should ideally be discussed in an extensive community.
In the fifth edition of their ongoing conference series “... in Dialogue”, the Digital Humanities and Open Science departments at Bern University Library are addressing the challenges of digital editions. As usual, hands-on parts will be combined with input from experts, and perspectives from the University of Bern will be presented and discussed alongside approaches from the wider community.

10 Dec 2024: Winter Wonderland of Research Data at the University of Lucerne
The Winter Wonderland of Research Data is an event that will bring together key stakeholders in the field of research data management, such as the Swiss National Science Foundation, SWISSUbase and the Federal Intelligence Service. Furthermore, we will provide information on the University’s project "RDM curriculum Campus Luzern" which is funded by swissuniversities and set to be completed by the end of 2024.
On December 10th, from 4pm to 5pm, you will have the opportunity to visit "exhibition stands", ask questions, and engage in informal discussions with the stakeholders, all while enjoying mulled wine, punch, and snacks.
Following the exhibition, there will be additional time for networking with fellow data steward coordinators, data stewards, and researchers until 5:30pm.
