Lisbon Recognition Convention
In 1997, the Council of Europe and UNESCO adopted a joint Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region in Lisbon (Nr. 165, "Lisbon Convention"), which supersedes all previous corresponding conventions of both organisations. The Lisbon Convention became effective on 1 February 1999. It applies only to those countries that have ratified it; for countries that have not done so, the old conventions remain in force.
